Restore failed - Error code=0x241

I have an Acer 5742 series laptop that has startup issues.  Upon powering up it will go to the screen that asks if you want to start Windows normally or do start up repair (recommended).  If you choose Start Up Repair, it goes through motions and gets to a message that says "Your computer was unable to start"  Do you want to do System restore?  Choosing that gets an error message of StartRep.exe - the instruction at 0xfc02ac53 referenced memory at 0x002c6hbc.  The memory could not be read.  Click Ok to terminate the program.  When terminating it goes back to the black screen with the choice to repair (recommended) or start normally.  By choosing normally it looks like it is running ok but when I put in the password, it goes through the motions and then right back to the password screen again.  Can anyone help?  I am not too computer literate but I can muddle through if given enough direction. 

 

I forgot to add that after a few minutes it shuts itself down and does a restart but never really gets anywhere.  It gets into this continuous loop of shutdown/restart.

If Windows 7 or earlier, can you use F8 to enter Safe Mode ? See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Sometimes you can use Safe Mode to find conflicts.
