Acer Liquid Gallant Duo crashing & can not restore

When powering up the phone, after entering pin code, the the message "unlocking SIM card" hangs for a long time. The network signal strength indicator shows no bars, although there is good network coverage in the area.

If I dismiss the pin request, forced close dialogs for all kinds of apps and processes (Unfortunately,  the process *** has stopped...) constantly pop up, making the phone unusable.

I have attempted to do a factory restore several times from the settings menu and also from the recovery menu accessed by powering up the phone with the power+vol.up key - factory reset & clearing cache - after rebooting the phone gets into the exact same state and also all my installed applications, accounts etc. are still there.

BB Chip: MT6577

MS Board: C8n

..

Kernel Ver.: 3.0.13 ...

Android Ver.: 4.0.4

SW Ver. : Acer_AV043_E350_1.000.08_TWN_GEN1D

...

I would try completely reflashing the rom images with a flash tool, but unfortunately the OS images available from the Acer support sites are for a MT6575 model, while mine is the dual core MT6577 (Liquid Gallant S Duo) model, available in Thaiwan (http://www.acer.co.th/ac/th/TH/content/model-datasheet/HM.HBBST.001)

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dimitri
