Aspire V3-771G hangs on sleep (Win 8 bugcheck 0x50: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA)

Hello,

I've had my Aspire for about 9 months now (with Windows 8, a well as Kubuntu 13.4 installed on it) and everything works fine except when I try putting it to sleep from Windows 8 - that's when the screen turns off, but the fans keep working, the power button stays lit and nothing can wake it up (pressing the power button after that just turns it off immediately).

This happens every single time, in any power profile, with default settings (clean install) and customized ones, with hibernation on and off - though I always turn it off (powercfg /h off), because I just need the ordinary sleep mode (no hybrid sleep or hibernate). I also disable all "turn off after" settings in the profile, and only keep the "sleep on lid closed" and "sleep on sleep button" (Fn + F4).

The only error messages I can see in the system event log are:

Critical: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

---

Warning: The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device ROOT\WPD\0000.

* Microsoft knowledge base says this one is safe to ignore

---

Error: The previous system shutdown at 17:28:35 on ‎11.‎9.‎2013. was unexpected.

---

Error: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x00000050 (0xfffff8801818c000, 0x0000000000000001, 0xfffff880018afe74, 0x0000000000000000). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 091113-23468-01.

---

Microsoft docs identify the bugcheck as PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

I've got all the latest updaes and drivers, a clean install and no suspicious programs and sevices running, so I don't know what else I can do to fix this, except maybe updating the BIOS (I've got v1.1).

Has anyone else had similar problems? Any suggestions?

    Hello again,

The v1.15 BIOS update and moving to Windows 8.1 fixed this for me, so I just thought I'd update this post if anyone has similar issues.
