The thread of shame- help!

Here goes... I accidentally tripped over my headphones yanking it out of the computer. I am no longer able to keep the plug in the jack, and I hear what sounds like screws moving around the front of the computer. I lived like this for a few months- not being able to use headphones. Today, my computer speakers stopped working all together. I can visibly see that they are functioning okay in the computer, nothing is muted, but no sound at all coming from the computer.

I watched a video on opening my lovely Aspire. That completely freaked me out. I won't be doing that on my own!

So now I am here as I no longer have a warrantee.

I was hoping I could avoid that.

Any shop will do? I had been thinking the shop where I bought the computer (not sure they are still in business), sending the computer to Acer (is that for warrantee holders only?), or finding an Acer based shop (do they exist?).

A neighbour's brother has a computer repair shop so I will probably go through him.

I did get sound again by the way.

Any idea of the cost I can expect for repairing or replacing the headphone jack?

I think you have a couple of options, although you are probably going to need professional help solving the problem, something of which I have experience. I have been looking for the cheapest solution for a screen repair/replacement for an aquaintance of mine. My experience is that prices charged by different shops vary quite considerably. In my case, I have been looking for a solution in the area of the Swiss/German/French border (Basel area).

Yes, there are shops that specialise in servicing particular brands: the Acer resellers may be able to help you.

Based on your description, it could be cheaper or more expensive to repair your computer, depending on the extent of internal damage, although I suspect that it will not be so much. Which country are you living in? I have experience buying, of repairing and replacing computers in some six different countries.

One more thing. My experience of different computer shops in terms of the quality of work is also quite varied. Especially the plastic cases can easily be broken or not properly reassembled, so try to find a repair shops that have a good reputation, and get quotes from different ones so that you can compare. I know that it's some work, and just calling them on the phone is not as good as taking the computer for them to examine. And I suggest setting a maximum price for a repair: sometimes it can be more economical to buy a new or used/second hand computer.
