**bleep**, this ain't good. Windows update is showing 50 important updates. I clicked "Install" and it sat there with "0 KB total, 0% complete" and never moved off zero KB and zero percent for ten minutes. The Internet light on the DSL-modem was not flashing so obviously nothing was happening, but I left it another half hour. Still 0 and 0%.

I then tried to do a Freshen of the System and it thought about it for a 10-seconds then said, "Some files are msissing, if you have the repair disk then insert it now."

OK, so no repair disk came with the laptop, so I check Acer's website and they want $45 for the repair media!

One week back I paid nearly 600-bucks for this thing and they want another $45.

My other laptop died and that's why I bought this one, so if it has to go in for warranty I am without it for weeks.

Obviously it is still under warranty, do I have to return it or what? This sucks big time.

Thanks.

Recovery media is actually loaded on your Acer computer. Please review this article. It will show you how to reload windows as well as how to create your own recovery disks.

Cory, thanks for the reply, but I mentioned that I tried the Refresh Recovery, I mistakenly called it "Freshen," sorry. It got to the point where it said click the "Refresh" button and I did. That's when it gave the missing files messsage above.

I have since tried the full restore to factory and same thing. Missing files.

I'm on my phone so I don't have more resources. Send me a private message with your serial number and ill do a bit of research in the morning.

Not surprisingly, I am being set upon by time-wasters here at Acer. No wonder they wanted me to PM to keep useless messages flying through.

The point is now moot, as with persistence and thinking through the problem, I have the thing working again. It took some disk-level, CMD-window and Registry work, but it is performing updates like a tiger. All 63 of them. Best of all my $45 is still in my pocket.

This is the second Acer I have owned in 10 years and after the last one I swore never again. Tech support is light at best. Should have listened to myself. Smiley Happy

Well, that seems slightly unfair to say we were wasting time. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a proper serial number and I couldn't do much more for you without it. I understand it is frustrating, but the serial number provides a lot of data about your specific unit that we can use to ensure you get the support you need.

I'm glad you got it working, but if you'll send me your serial number in a private message I'll be glad to continue to review this for you. Since you've only had the unit for a week, we could look at getting a set of recovery disks out so that you're covered in the future should you need them.
