Aspire 5742 Turning off suddenly while using
Hi,
I am using Acer Aspire 5742 laptop for about 1 year. it was workinf fine until last month onwards it turns off suddenly while using. this happens frequently while watching 1080p videos and while browsing . I suspect this is due to some over heating issue.
So is there anything i can do to solve the issue or i have to take to service center??
need help..
Thank you.

If the system is only powered on and sitting, it never powers down by itself?
This only occurs when you are using it to play videos from the web?

You can try blowing out the vents with an air canister. Just be sure to follow the directions on the can.

I have a 7520 that does the same thing. I have a MXM card in mine. I updated to
an ATI 3650M card because the Nvidia needed to be repaired. It had been
working fine or as fine as an old laapy can, but has started doing this sudden
shut down deal. The core was updated to a AMD Turion 64. It runs 4 gigs of
ram. Cores temps run anywhere from 41 C TO 60 C.
Not sure why this is shutting down streaming vids or Youtube. Doesn't seem to
be overheating. I may run MEMTEST on it and do a WD Lifeguard test on the
hard drive.
If I find out what is causing this to mine, I'll post back ans see if maybe your's
may have the same prob.
UPDATE,
It appears that heat is indeed the problem. As the core is using it's full power
to stream vids, heat appears to build up to such a level that a thermal swt
built into the unit shuts the unit down. I also found a interesting thread
about Affinity settings regarding the cores and how to possibly help keep
it running a bit cooler.

Now I know that the cooling radiator, fan and vents are almost spotless, but
the fan doesn't seem very powerful, so I may get a fan supported cooling pad
to set the unit on to get lois of cool air into it.

I am having the same issue with my aspire 5742Z. Since my warranty is expired I have decided to replace the heatsink.
I have done it in other laptops.
I have been looking for a manual that show the full diagram to open this laptop. does anybody have a link or knows where to find it.
Thank you.

Just went through mine. Mine is a G model, but the same in basics.
This will guide you. Sadly the 5742's are known to get pretty hot.
I replaced with the I5-460M with a I5-560M and probably didn't
it help it any regarding heat. Anyway >
