aspire 5552 power issue three flashing lights

Computer powers up ok. After it is running for a bit the power light on the "on" button the other power light and charge lights all start flashing and the computer goes into battery mode only. After many attempts it will finally use power from the wall and start charging the battery. What is up with the three flashing lights? The battery, once charged, seem to operate normally. I fear that soon my battery will not charge at all. Oh! one more thing. With the battery removed the computer will not power up or stay on, it just shuts down when using power from the wall.

First guess is that charger operation is intermittent.  Due either to the charger itself or the connections. Substitute another test charger or measure charger output for a reasonable time period.  Check for loose connection.
