To Acer on a W3 followon

I deal a lot with senior people. East of the Mississippi they are known as "suits" for good reason. Across the pond, moreso. On the left coast they often lose the tie but jackets are still the norm.

One issue with the iPad and W3 is that neither firs easily into a jacket pocket. My Galaxy tab 2 7.0 (4.5"/114mm wide) does but the HDMI support was redacted.

My bluetooth keyboard/touchpad/laser pointer has no problem fitting in a pocket as does the mini HDMI to VGA adapter (with audio output jack) or Mini HDMI to regular HDMI cord.

But the W3 is a stretch, not easy to move in and out. It also strains the tablet holder in my car.

So when designing the replacement please try to make it fit a normal suit or sport jacket inside pocket. It would be a big plus.

Until the processors get smaller and faster again there isn't much hope. They probably just will add more stuff to it and the physical size will not shrink.

I am reminded of an urban legend regarding the space race. The Americans apparently spent millions of dollars developing a pen that would write upside down on earth and in any orientation in space. The Russians used pencils.

Surely the suits can afford to have larger pockets installed in their custom made suits.

I can just imagine trying to clean up pencil shavings floating in the air around the pencil sharpener, before they got into something important...

That is what I meant. If you consider that the current Clover Trail processors (Z2670) based on 32nm design rules and the Bay Trail is 22nm, the latter will be lower power, faster, and physically smaller. This will provide both more space and more power for other peripherals (GPS, USB 3.0) and require even less cooling.

I am really not asking for much, essentally the same I/O capability (plus HDMI out) as in my Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, just with Windows instead of Android. I do believe that the form factor is critical. If it can fit in a jacket pocket that is a major step forward, everything else is just evolutionary.

Once that is accomplished we can look for the next step, a common docking systen for use at home and in a car. One that includes both charging capability and a powered USB hub. One that can lock the tablet in a car and fold flat when being used with a real keyboard, mouse, and monitor (touch screen monitors in the 22-24" bracket are available now, just expensive).

I have no doubt that at some point all of this will become available in something the size of a smart phone but that is a ways off yet.

Yes, there are challenges. What killed steam engines (external combustion) in cars was mainly the time required to "get up steam" but a Stanley did not have a remote starter. We will solve them.

I just sincerely hope that Acer realizes that creating a standard is more important than maintaining proprietary connectors (using something standard (but rare) for the W3 power supply connector is a good first step.
