I hope that you are not injured. Assuming that the smoke has stopped, remember that your life is more valuable than the laptop. Unplug it. When the smoke stops, see if you can remove the battery. Probably, the fire was caused by the battery.

    1) Can you give us the model number of your laptop?

    2) Is this the original battery? If not, is it an EXACT duplicate or a third-party battery?

    3) What surface is normally underneath your laptop? (A table, your bed, your lap, etc.)

    4) Have you added RAM, a video card, etc.? If so, what company manufactured them and who installed them?

    5) Is your laptop plugged into a surge protector?

    6) Have you overclocked your CPU?

    7) Can you give us the manufacturer and model number of your battery?

A lithium-ion battery will produce tiny pieces of metal over time. If the battery becomes too hot, the liquid inside the battery starts moving, and that moves the metal pieces. If they break the thin metal wall that separates the battery's terminals, a fire or explosion can occur.

If you can repost with the answers to my questions, I can help you figure out why it happened. The next question, of course, is can your laptop be repaired? The answer depends on what a certified repairman says about the amount of damage, as well as the age of your laptop.

And Bob, one more thing. You're more valuable than that laptop. If it's under warranty, they'll replace it, but they can't replace you. Don't do anything dangerous.
