How can I boot a USB drive in UEFI mode?

Hi,

I have an Acer Aspire One AO-725 that I want to restore to factory settings. Unfortunately my recovery partition seems not to work (getting a message about a missing partition). So, I ordered recovery DVD's/CD's  from Acer. Rather silly ofcourse, since my laptop does not have a CD/DVD drive, but this was the only option offered. As a solution, I made a bootable thumb drive with an image of the bootable recovery CD on another machine.

I can not for the life of me get my laptop to boot from USB while in UEFI mode however. If I switch to Legacy mode, it boots but I get an alert that says 'the device needs to be booted in UEFI mode' (pretty kafkaesque, huh). I use the boot menu to select a boot device, but the only options I get are HDD and Windows Boot Manager.

Guys, this is seriously frustrating. I'm pretty good with computers and this is a task that I should be able to do. Who can tell me how to boot off USB in UEFI mode?
