W3 &W510 accessories

Note: did not mention the other "W" tablets since I do not have one. Your milage may vary.

These are things that I bought that work well with mine. YMMV. Keep in minds that I am of Scots heritage.

Since some of those accessories are unknown - did you purchase any cable or other "thingie" to connect the w3 to a pc or mac so that you can directly move files/folders to the w3 and vice versa?

No, since both are real Windows PCs, I just use network shares or flash drives to exchange files.

Am wondering just what the relationship between OD and Acer is, there seems to be more than just supplier-vendor.

ps almost everything was available from Amazon in the US. Nothing was mentioned that I have not tried.

Have you been able to find a replacement power supply for the W3?

Not yet. It looks like a standard short barrel connector but measures about 3mm OD, 1 mm ID. Suspect this (http://www.cui.com/product/resource/pp-019.pdf) will fit but will have to get a sample to be sure. May just go down to the local Rat Shack and see if they have an Enercell Adapaplug "G". (http://support.radioshack.com/support_tutorials/batteries/pwrgde-2H.htm)

Update: The Rat Shack "Adaptaplug Tip G" (turquoise tip) 273-324 does appear to fit the connector however I would only connect a tightly regulated and filtered switching 12vdc 1.5a power supply (e.g. Delta ADP-18TB A) and not a pooly regulated wall wart. An external 12v battery should be OK but not directly to a vehicle power system.

Do wish Acer would provide specifications of what power the W3 requires.

I got the Acer case at BH Photo NY for $21.50 plus UPS shipping = $27.50 I got a Targus stylus but it has too big of a tip to use as a pointer. I have several micro USB cords but none of them plug into this tablet. Is this a special size micro USB? Thank you

There are three major USB sizes - Type A (fill sized), mini-B, and micro-B See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB toward the bottom of the page. My W3 and W510 both use the micro-B.

I bought a couple from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GI2VMG that work fine with both.

@Padgett you may like these if your intrested ..I'm sure others would be intrested as well ...Was looking for something that would save the back of my Tablet from getting scrathed to pieces when I sit it down on a flat surface or bed or rug etc The plastic back/coating isn't very durable and can get scratched with just a finger nail ....

My only issue with this gel skin is you have to remove it when you wanna connect your W510 docking keyboard as it its makes it a hair to thick to fit into it with the sleeve on Smiley Sad

Thanks Padget, The one I got with a card reader looks awful close but not it. I also noticed in an Amazon search that there are male and female micro B's. I went and ordered one listed for the W3. I will be waiting to see the differences.

I have keyboard cases for both but the one for my G-Tab fits the W510 much better than the one for the W3 so I just leave it in the factory case.

Have so many adapters that I have seperate toolboxes for USB, HDMI, audio, and rear cameras so can generally find what I want. Also when an adapter is just a buck or so I generally order two.

Been playing with a 7" TFT display as an extended on the W3 and have come to the conclusion that 7" is just too small for my fingers so have an 8" coming in next week. One key is an autoswitch so when the RCA plug video goes live it will switch for the rear view camera. The bluetooth keyboard/trackpad/laser pointer make it easy even with the 7" but not always there.

Even though the 8" display is really the bottom size for Windows I hope they can make the W4 (W3 Bay Trail follow on) just a 1/2" narrower (can be a bit longer if they need the real estate) but my Samsung Tab 2 7.0 fits easily in my jacket pocket and the W3 doesn't. Such problems.

yeah i bought mine seperate well errr to be honest here in Canada not only could you barely find the W510 but you couldn't find the combo pack nor the keyboard dock ...I bought that well traded a gy in Cali, U.S I always wanted the Acer case and wanted to try the ethernet adapter

Padgett, I just got my W3 on a local workgroup. Finding the workgroup page was a lot of work for me. But afterwards I found I could have just done a search for "workgroup". Now I have printers and NAS.

I got that micro USB and it is a little wider than what I had and it is thinner top to bottom. Plugged a key board in and works fine. My stylus continues to be too big for selecting options. The only small tiped stylus I found were digitizer stylus.

That is correct. Capacitive styluses have to be fairly wide or else the touchscreen doesn't see them. They are typically narrower than your finger however! :-)

Hi Billsey, Last night I tried my web mail for the first time. It was a nightmare trying to type my name and password in because the keyboard covered the input boxes on the screen. The screen did not scroll. Sometimes when I tried to select the keyboard, I would move the cursor unknowingly. Then when I was done with the keyboard, I would find the cursor had not been in the input box while I was typing.

I may have found the stylus you are looking for... There's a kickstarter project for Nota, which is an ultra thin stylus for capacitive touchscreens. The way they get around the 'fat finger' requirements is with active hardware within the stylus. It does require a battery (AAA) to work, but the power requirements are really low so the battery should last a long time.

Also, you might try using the Windows accessibility keyboard instead of the normal one. It allow more flexibility for resizing and you could perhaps scruntch it down enough to uncover the fields you need to type in.

I will on occasion use a bluetooth mouse. I don't really like the trackball experience so I don't have one myself. I typically don't use either but there are those programs that just refuse to work cleanly via a touch interface...

For my W3 I use a BT keypad/trackpad/laser pointer from Amazon. It fits in an eygless case and is wonderful for presentations using PowerPoint since the pg up/pg dn is on the side. Recharges via USB.

Been working on a dual touch display for the W3 recently. Small monitors with VGA & touch are rare and 7" was too small, 8" seems OK. To calibrate the touch on the second monitor I had to make it the only display, run the calibration tool, then reset to dual (extended). Touch now works on both sides.

Second display also has a NTSC (RCA plug) a/v input for the rear view camera, just need to mod to switch from PC to AV when in reverse automagically. Much easier than using an EasyCap.

Also found some touch styluses that are marked "capacitive" but really work with both capacitive and resistive. I have small fingers but a stylus is really easier and more precise and these are small diameter but long enough to be comfortable.

I got a real deal today, when I went to give blood. I was talking with the tech there and asked how he handled typing into his email account. A real Duh, he said "you are using the tablet in landscape? I say yes. He says rotate the tablet and you will see the input bixes above the keypad. Ha Ha
