hyper-V & Bios

I did a clean install on my Acer Aspire V-5 571P laptop to Windows 8 Professional 64 bit.

It came with Windows 8 Standard but I wanted the features that come with

Windows 8 Pro. More to the point I wanted to play with Hyper-V.

Unfortunately the System Bios Version V2.03 is limited no advanced tab to set up virtualization.

MSINFO32.exe shows Hyper-v shows VM monitor yes, S.L.A.T. second level address translation yes,

Virtualization enable yes, and Data execution enabled yes.

Does anyone know how to unlock the Bios so the advanced tab shows.

Going to Turn on Windows features Hyper-V does not appear.

I I understand why Acer would limit the Bios. I would ask Acer but my machine is not under warranty

because I bought it refurbished to save some money.

I have the same question... How to turn on Virtualization in BIOS so that Hyper-V will run in Win8 Pro.

Welcome aboard, Ben. I found three reviews for your machine, and they all express surprise at how they managed to pack a touchscreen with a good-quality laptop at such a low price. The answer? They used a lot of older parts.

Changing the operating system on a laptop is almost always a mistake, and I'm impressed that you did such a good job of it. But your machine is not designed for the special features of Windows 8 Premium, and if you change the BIOS on a machine that is working well, you can cause yourself a lot of problems.

Ben mentioned that msinfo32 indicated that virtualization was enabled in BIOS by default, so I thought I would experiment.

I entered my Win 8 Pro product key, and that was accepted, and the upgrade completed.

So I enabled Hyper-V in the Programs and Features Control Panel, and that worked.

So I started up Hyper-V and started to configure a virtual machine and it looks like that's going to work too. I'm out of time to install an OS today, but I'll be back.

I agree. Windows 8 PRO just turns on features that is already in the Windows 8 operating system. I used that method on my W510.

The Hyper-V issue is a little different. Intel refers to it as Execute Disable (XD). This feature must be enabled in the system BIOS. This does not mean there needs to be a BIOS switch, just that it must be enabled. Current Intel and AMD processors both have the capability.

Wheter supported & turned on or not can be determined by running MSINFO32.EXE. With Windows 8 Pro 64, at the bottom there will be four lines (see att - from an older AMD test machiine - am told that Hyper-V does not require SLAT) The last line refers to the Execution state.
