Re: How to sense and control fan speed from linux, for acer predator helios neo 16 PHN16-71 laptop?
well as expected didn't get any update on this page also, when i was reading this page i already know i will not get the solution here, i have seen ACER being very lazy in terms of software support my predator neo 16 struggled for about 6 months since the day i brought because the Predator sense app was broken by default 3-4 time windows reinstall from bootable pd didn't solve the problem, hours and hours of SC calls and waiting and same basic questions like have you updated your windows to latest, and all, until one day one nice guy from SC told me a hack use the Predator sense app for different model,
and i saw a darker side, this predator sense doesn't just worked properly it also had more features, like ACER does not want us to have this version,
NOW before some guy come try to teach me like all software are build for there model and all [Content Removed], let me tell you after a month or 2 the same version are officially given to lower end model.
when you are making so much mess in native windows env, how can someone expect LINIUX like support, may be thats the reason see more youth buying ASUS, MSI or dell and not ACER PREDATOR,
well if you cannot build one at least open source your Predator sense app so that Open source community can build one.

Re: Does Acer Nitro 5 a515-57 have Overdrive settings?
The lack of an Overdrive setting on the Acer Nitro 5 a515-57 is largely due to it being a budget gaming laptop, where manufacturers prioritize affordable CPU/GPU performance and features over premium display hardware. Most budget gaming laptops use average IPS panels, which usually have limited response times and may be more prone to ghosting, with few options for advanced screen tweaks like Overdrive
For better experience and less ghosting, consider getting a good external gaming monitor and connect it via the HDMI port of your Acer Nitro 5 a515-57
Re: Does Acer Nitro 5 a515-57 have Overdrive settings?
Hi Arxerious,
Windows does have a “Graphics Acceleration” option in Settings → System → Display → Graphics (or via app‑specific graphics performance settings), but that’s more about performance tuning and power usage — it’s unlikely to resolve the “ghosting” you’re describing.
On the Nitro 5 AN515‑57 series, there’s no user‑accessible Overdrive toggle in NitroSense or the BIOS, so you can’t manually change the panel’s response time settings. Ghosting on these displays is usually a limitation of the panel’s native response time rather than something that can be switched off in software.
You can try:
- Ensuring the NVIDIA driver is up to date from GeForce Experience or Acer’s support site.
- Setting the refresh rate to the panel’s maximum in Settings → System → Display → Advanced display.
- Testing with and without V‑Sync or G‑SYNC (if available) in games to see if it reduces visible trails.
If the ghosting is present in Windows menus and browsers as well as games, it’s likely a characteristic of the panel rather than a GPU setting.

Re: For Nitro5 AN515-57: Any working method to limit charging at 80% in linux ...?
Hi NervousDetective,
Acer Care Center (with the 80% battery charge limiting feature) doesn’t run in Linux—even in dual boot—but it can still affect battery behavior. That’s because when you set a charge limit in Windows, the app writes that setting to the EC (Embedded Controller), which is part of the firmware. That limit then persists across reboots, even into Linux, because it’s enforced at the hardware level—not by the app itself.
Unfortunately, Linux tools like tlp or acer-wmi-battery can’t override that EC setting unless Acer exposes a writable interface, which they don’t on most models.
If you're trying to break the link and restore full charging in Linux, the cleanest method is:
- Reinstall Windows without Acer Care Center.
- Fully drain the battery to ~5%, then recharge to 100% to force recalibration.
- Optionally, update the BIOS to refresh EC firmware.
Uninstalling Care Center alone won’t reset the EC, and registry edits aren’t reliable for this. A clean Windows setup without Acer utilities gives you the best chance of clearing the firmware-level limit.
