Hi badgirl, around the mouth edge of the CD player you will see a small pin-hole. It is there so that you can push a paperclip into the hole and push on the button there a few times. It will manually open the player. From there one can look for a jammed disc or other cause of problem.

That unit has a thermo module that is replaceable. There are five screws that must come of in sequence, and some messy thermo-paste that got to go on so-so. Don't get it all over. Instructions likely online. Hopefully with the replacement module. Your call. Maybe that fan has been stressed out as well.

Try to locate start/programs. Do you remember the program name?

Go to Control Panel --> Programs and Features and find Synaptic in the list. See if there is a conflict. Repair or reinstall.
