It seems a simple job removing the back cover[All screws same length, earthing yourself, and replacing. But if the new drive has a clone or image of old HDD using say Macrium reflect has anyone come up against W10 not being recognised even though windows key is supposed to be injected in the motherboard.

I had a problem with this windows activation  in 2014 when Acer replaced the HDD - they had to get a local techie to call in and fix it - now out of warranty of course

Once you have the HDD out, clone it to the SSD with another computer and when you put it in and boot, other than recognizing that the HDD magically turned into a SSD, Windows won't even know something else happened and you will still be activated.

You shouldn't worry about re-activation. It's not a big deal to replace your HDD or SSD and have Windows 10 re-activate.

    You can clone or

You can clean install windows 10 or

You can create recovery media and re-install with recovery media.

You should always backup your important personal files no matter what....before you attempt to replace your HDD or SSD.

And create recovery media (and also an Applicationns and Drivers backup if you use any of the Acer pre-installed software)

    I'm not an Acer employee.

He asked about cloneing. With a clone you don't have to reinstall the Windows and the programs and the updates and drivers and etc.

Hardware done but won't boot - is this due to multiple partitions or shrinking them down to 480 HB ssd - old drive was 500
Using dos all files seem to be on the ssd

Did you use Macrium to do the clone?

Did you shrink it to exactly 480GB or under?
