My laptop takes 3 minutes to start up, even with an SSD.

Hi, I've had this laptop for 3 years and this problem started a while ago pretty randomly. For starters, I know its not a virus because I've done a complete reset of my laptop, replaced my hard drive with an SSD and it's still the same. I use it only for the internet, school and the occasional game, and that's about it. This really sucks because it's a great laptop and I still use it despite it taking so long to start up. It used to take 12 seconds, so it's a huge jump. I've looked online a lot and someone else mentioned a post on here about their own laptop taking a while to startup as well but got nothing. If there is anything that can be done, or any tips, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    What is the model number?

    Is it running Windows 10?

    Does it still have the recovery partitions?

    How did you get the system on the SSD?

    Open Power Options. On the left, click Choose what the power buttom does, click change settings that are currently unavailable, scroll down and uncheck Turn on Fast Startup, save changes and exit. Reboot.

    Hi,

     

    Well to start you should see what's taking so long to load.

    To do this you will need to enable verbose on your system

     

    Hit winkey+R and type in msconfig.

    Then here at boot check OS Boot Information box and hit OK.

    Then to see if a service is taking so long hit the winkey+r and type in regedit

    Here navigate through the registry and go to:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
    Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

    Here create a new Dword and name it VerboseStatus and set it to 1.

     

    At this point restart the computer and see at what driver/service your system takes so much to load.

     

    I cannot tell you if this will give you any useful information but you can try.

     

    You can then revert the changes by doing the opposite things of what I told you.

    Thanks for the response! However, I did not see anything come up after doing those two things you referred to. The laptop simply restarted and that was it. Could I have done something wrong?

    Yes it is on Windows 10

    How do I check for those?

    And I cloned all my files to the SSD using the Samsung Data Migration Tool. 

    I've tried that before and that didn't work, it started up at the same time.

    ZRK isn't a model number. Maybe a clue? Is it a V5-572?

    Open Disk Manager and post a screen shot of it.

    I am sorry, but I tested it now and it looks like in windows 10 is not working for some stupid reason. I was using this on my windows 7 a few years ago but i don't know why they disabled it on windows 10.

     

    I don't think that this suggestion will help but did you try to disable fast startup?

    In power options --> change what power buttons do --> Change settings that are currently unavailable --> uncheck fast startup.

    But as I told you I don't think that it will work.

    If your system is stuck at the windows 10 logo and the circle of dots I am expecting a driver issue to be the main reason why your notebook is loading so slow.

    Yes I did that, although not through Acer Care Center if that makes a difference. I just went to the settings and did it from there. But yeah, it still took 3 minutes

    That's weird, maybe I can go back to Windows 8 and see if it works there? This did begin before I upgraded to Windows 10.

    And yeah I've tried that, it helped bring it down by a about 20 seconds which is at least progress. And possibly, thats why I replaced my old hard drive with a brand new SSD but I'm still getting the same result of taking a while to load up.

    Can you do a speedtest of your SSD using Crystal Disk Mark. It It should give you some results around 500 MB/S for your SSD if it's on SATA III. http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskMark/index-e.html

     

    Also when you did the reset of the PC from settings did you select to keep your data, or you selected to delete everything?

     

    One important thing to note. If you upgraded to w10 more than 30 days ago, you cannot go back to windows 8.

    That's weird, sharky25k, but do you think it would work on Windows 8? This problem did start before I had upgraded to Windows 10.

    And yes, I've tried that, it only reduced the time by about 20 seconds so I guess that's some progress. Also if it is a driver issue, how would I go about fixing that?

    Sorry, had to write another message because yours wasn't showing! But I'll try that out and see. Also I did a reset, deleting everything, about about two weeks ago and upgraded to Windows 10 following that so I should be able to revert back right?

    I tried the Crystal Disk Mark app and I got around 500 MB/S like you said. That would mean my SSD is working properly right?

    Hi,

     

    It looks like your SSD works fine, and I don't think there is any issue with it.

     

    To be honest I don't even know if rolling back to windows 8 will solve the issue. You can check if you are able to roll back to windows 8 by going into settings --->Update and Security ---> Recovery , and here should be an option go back to Windows 8 (or 8.1).

    Please make sure when you reinstall the system that you have all drivers installed (including the AHCI drivers), also if you have the latest BIOS installed and finally check if you have in BIOS the SATA mode set to AHCI and not legacy.

    Unfortunely I am not able to revert back, when I tried it said that the files necessary to reverting back were removed from the PC. I haven't deleted anything since I upgraded to Windows 10, unless it deleted the files or replaced them on its own?

    Hi,

     

    The only thing which stands out from here is the fact that your SSD is a samsung one:-).

    I did not suggest you to do a boot log because is quite uninformative. You don't see any timestaps, and you cannot figure out where the system sits and takes some time to boot (if it sits at a specific driver or something like this).

     

    Searching on the internet there are a few people which complaim about some slow boot on samsung SSD's, and they suggest to try upgrade the SSD firmaware via samsung magician. I don't know if it will help, but you can give a try to see if you have some newer firmware.

    The complains were on samsung 840 evo drives, but you could search to see if people are complaining also for your drive model.

    I know, but since I couldn't use OS Boot Information I figured I could at least try with Boot Log. Also, I have found something searching for other problems with their SSD and loading times. I found this particular one where someone mentioned to do the following: 

     

    "Install the WPT (part of the Win10 SDK: dev.windows.com/en-us/downloads/windows-10-sdk), run WPRUI.exe, select First Level, DiskIO, FileIO and under Performance Scenario select Boot. Number of iteration can be set to 1 and click to start. This reboots Windows and captures all activity during boot. After the reboot let the countdown tick to 0 to capture 2 minutes of activity after boot."

     

    The result I got after doing this led to ShellExperienceHost.exe to be using up a lot of my CPU and causing a MsgCheckDelay. So that is where the problem could be. Do you know anything about this?

    Hi,

     

    This exceeds my knowledge about the windows 10 environment. I only know that the shell experience host is responsible for many of the customizations of the computer interface (like colors, desktop backgrounds icons and so on).

    The fact that causes a mesage delay means that the process is stuck somewhere. You see, here could be stuck at a lot of things even failing to read for example your background image from the SSD. Could you try to run chkdsk /f on your disk drive? I don't expect to have an error but you cannot be sure. Also do you have in Samsung magician somewhere optimize for performance? or performance optimization? Could you try this one as well

     

    Could you tell me do you have the recovery partition clonned to your SSD as well?

     

    I see that you tried a lot of things and since you don't have many softwares installed you could try to reinstall the OS from a USB drive. You can do this by downloading the windows 10 ISO (home or professional, depending what you have) https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10 and making a USB bootable drive.

     

    Then if you don't have the recovery drive on the system you could try to delete all the partitions during the installation and reate a new ones on which you will install your system. If you have the recovery one then just try to install the system on the old OS partition but format it when prompted.

    I don't know, probably this could help somehow, but to be honest if even the hard reset (delete all files and settings) did not improve the situation I don't have much hope that this will improve it somehow.
