My Acer laptop isn't upgradeable to Windows 10.

I bought my present computer, Aspire E17_711-P3LV, believing it to be Windows 10 ready. The Microsoft Updgrade to Windows 10 app says it's ready, but if you try upgrading, it's a disaster. This seems to be because it has an Intel VGA, and Acer only provides software for upgrading the NVIDIA VGA. I don't think is fair, but perhaps it isn't Acer's fault, although they could make the position clearer.

Is there anyway of getting round this problem, for example by replacing the VGA hardware?

    Hi 44Mont_man

You're right, it isn't the fault of Acer - they do not write the drivers. Component manufacturer's (like Intel) do!

Go to Intel's driver update page here & let it scan for the right driver.

Incidentally, sometimes different hardware combinations upgrade differently, so if you're trying to upgrade to Windows 10 via Windows Update, then try either using the Window 10 Upgrade Tool instead or use it to burn a Windows 10 disc, then install from that.

what do you mean with "it's a disaster"?

which kind of issues you had?

you can try to install Intel VGA drivers from Intel website instead of Acer; just remember to uninstall Acer drivers before installing Intel's.

    I'm not an Acer employee.

I downloaded the Intel Driver Update Utility, which returned the following message: "Graphics. A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. [There follows a warning against trying to replace a customized driver with a generic one.] Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer."

This does seem to land the ball firmly back in Acer's court.

The display kept freezing for longer and longer periods as the computer kept running and eventually crashed, although it immediately rebooted. I returned the machine to Acer under guarantee and they replaced some bits of hardware. I also sent it back to the retailer under his guarantee, because it still wasn't working properly and they did some more to it. Since then it has worked satisfactorily, but only under Windows 8.1.

See also my reply to IronFly on this topic. I think the problem goes much deeper than either of you gentlemen realizes. I have been advised by one of the online support team that the machine is not upgradeable in any straightforward way, but Acer won't come out and say so. If only they would say that, I could go back to the retailer, because I think they misled me when they sold it to me.

    44Mont_Man,

If you are referring to the ES1-711 I show that it is eligible for the Windows 10 upgrade. I can really only echo what has been suggested, maybe you can try removing the graphic drivers before the upgrade process and let Windows install the default drivers. I see that we have the Intel drivers listed under Windows 8, have you tried those? I can ask about drivers for Windows 10 for Intel, but "typically" when they are not listed it means the Windows 10 drivers are the best.
