I am trying to find the link again, but a few months ago I read a study about SSD failure. Typically they fail early in their life or rarely at all. Of course as there are no moving parts, typically the common failure issue with a HDD, the motor, is alleviated. However, with SSDs, partly related to the cutting edge high speed nature of the SSD itself, faulty switching components of the SSD normally fail early on. So if you get past 3-4 months with your S7, you will probably never see an SSD failure.
With HDD, the typical failure is that the motor starts drawing too much current. This causes a voltage collapse in the driving circuitry and you hear the HDD spin up, click, spin down a bit, spin up, click, spin down a bit. I am sure we have all heard that failure before! This is why, despite energy concerns, the best things for real HDDs, is to leave them permanently on and never spin-down. The spin-up cycle is where the stress occurs.

I bought an Acer Aspire S5 and after two months of use the solid state drive was death. I was outside of United States and Acer didn't want to recognize the warranty. I paid 2,350 for this computer and now is garbage. I had to buy another computer in order to do my work. Does anyone know how the warranty work outside of United State?

Hi,
I read with interest the previous comments about early failure rates but what are the odds on getting a reliable drive before the warranty runs out ???
I had the SSD fail on my M5 after about 7 months. Acer replaced it under warranty but it has just failed again a month out of warranty. So 2 failed SSDs in 13 months. Tech support says there is nothing they can do but charge me to have a replacement fitted. That does not seem fair to me. Not at all happy.
I am now waiting for the UK_Escalations dept to get back to me.

Hi,
I have started a new topic as "Second SSD dies after only 13 months" in this forum. To hear what Acer do for me please drop by.

Hi All,
I had another SSD die on me. Have had 3 units fail now and Acer say everything else is functioning correctly so it must be faulty drives. Offered a 4th unit told them no thanks. Pointless, as I can't rely on the M5 to last more than 6 months before the SSD dies.
I don't believe the SSD are at fault, something else is causing the problem, but then their engineer knows better than I.
