I have tried all the suggested software fixes, Realtek indicates everything is working, but when I try to test it, nothing works. Audio speakers work fine. It appears the internal microphone is turned off, but I can't find any information in Acer manual (big surprise!) or elsewhere that indicates how to turn it on.
Any ideas, folks?

Can you post a screnshot of "recording devices"?
right click on the speaker icons near clock&date, bottom right of your screen, choose "recording devices"

Thanks for offering to help.
I was unable to make a screenshot, but it shows a symbol of a microphone with a green check on it, and says Realtek High Definition Audio Default Device. I have tried all the checks on this countless times, following every single suggestion and lead from multiple sources, but it still doesn't work. I have enabled/disabled the microphone, etc. Everything indicates the system (software?) is working, but it isn't. Also tried Skype echo test without success.
Any suggestions are welcome. Is there there some other place where one can enable the microphone?

Oh, I also wanted to mention that after having difficulties with this for several days, I updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 over the weekend, but no change. I have tried restarting my computer several times, etc, but again no luck.
I had had problems with my laptop (freezing of screen on internet and Microsoft applications) for a long time, so I finally sent it to them for repair just before the warranty ran out, and they replaced the hard drive and reloaded it a few weeks ago. Everything else on the computer seems to be working though I have not run it rigorously enough to know for sure.
I just surf and create word processing documents, no gaming or anything special on this laptop.
