Far be it from me to step in here... but you might want to get a bit more specific, exactly what computer you have, the exact model and exact processor and overall specifications. Might help you get an answer.
I upgraded a processor in my ASUS G50VT-X5 back in 2009. It was an amazing laptop, I would still be using it if not for phsycial damage thanks to my loving puppy.
Came with an Intel Core2 Duo P7450 and I wanted to max out the computer. I believe i upgraded the RAM right after purchase, a few months later I was doing a lot of video work and ripping DVDs then compiling them into hi-qual .MP4 and .MKVs with HandBrake.fr .. it would take 8+ hours easy. So I researched, and found I could maximize the CPU. There was a brand-new-released Core 2 Duo T9600 ... A big time upgrade from 2.13 GHz to 2.8 GHz. Some people thought I was crazy... when it was released it was costing nearly $600.. I got it for $339 and then a $20 tube of thermal paste. Installed it at work, took 10 minutes. It was huge.
Now I have a brand new, 3 week old, Acer Aspire V5-552PG-X469 which comes with the Acer Richland-series A10-5757M 2.5 GHz (Turbo to 3.5 GHz). I am happy with this and I believe it is not at all upgradeable. (if it was in fact upgradeable I would be probably interested in seeing what it could go with). One thing AMD is big on with Richland and even the Trinity-seres (I had an Aspire V3-551-8887 with a Trinity-series CPU) is they are very low power. 35W. So you can't get too powerful.
