Recently I have ordered and received a new Acer V5-552G-X852 labtop from Amazon. (Originally received with Windows 8, I've upgraded it to Windows 8.1) I've noticed that when the computer is put under load the fan makes noise.
I normally wouldn't have a problem with this noise, but it sounds abnormal (almost a buzzing noise). It's very noticeable, and I've had people near me comment on the buzzing. I've tried to update the BIOS to the latest version, but there is no change in the noise coming from the computer when I play a movie, or a game.
I've noticed that if I were to hold my laptop a certain way the noise goes away but there's no way that I can use the laptop this way. I think the fan may either not be installed correctly, or may be faulty.

Hi GhostFlyer
You might be right.
Did the fan make the same noise before you updated to Windows 8.1? If it did, the fan may well be at fault.
If the problem didn't happen with 8.0, then it could be an issue with 8.1, because Microsoft changed a few things with the update, and it's not compatible with all hardware/drivers. Go to the Acer support site, and download ALL the latest drivers for 8.1.
If that still doesn't help, you may need to revert back to 8.0 and/or contact support, who can arrange a repair. They may ask you to revert back to 8.0 anyway....!

I have the same problem with my fan. How did it resolve for you?

Can either of you guys capture it and upload the video to youtube? If we can check it then we can settle if it's a fault or not right away.
One interesting thing to note is that you can try tilting your laptop and sometimes the noise will stop, either way it is still a faulty fan even if it stops.
EDIT: Just wanted to add that regardless of windows 8/8.1 update it won't affect your fan noise, in the sense that the speeds are regulated by an embedded controller. At this point in time u'd have to use some very model specific hacks to change it. But if 8.1 somehow runs the cpu at higher speeds then MAYBE? Unlikely though; you'd be able to tell with task manager to see if your laptop is constantly pushing prosessor power.

Here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHRUwdWbrz8
It is the buzzing noise in the video that is concerning. When i bought the computer it was delivered with windows 8.1 btw. The noise is very disturbing, you can still hear a ringing noise in your ears after you turn off the computer. The buzzing noise is more pronounced in real life but I think you can still hear it in the video

That sounds like it's just from one side, right? It does sound defective, especially if it's just one side and your cpu temps are normal. I did pick up the high pitched noise when u got close to the fan; that's new to me, don't think i've ever heard it that high before. Some fans do get high pitched when speeds get high but that was pretty sharp!
Time to call support! Hope you have a repair centre near u.
