TravelMate P273-MG Cannot Burn Discs

Why can't I burn DVDs?

I have a TravelMate P273-MG with a MAT**bleep**A DVD-RAM UJ8E1 DVD writer, factory installed.

It doesn't seem to matter what type of file or type of media I use, I cannot burn to disc.

I always get an error like, "Incompatible medium installed."

Things I've Tried:

  • Different DVD types (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, etc.).
  • Different disc makers.
  • Uninstalling the device, restarting the computer, reinstalling the device.
  • Burning with built-in Windows File Explorer and ImgBurn.
  • Tried to find a newer or different driver. No luck.

Also, can't use Mat**bleep**a as a Message Tag here because it contains a coarse word for fecal matter. Nice.

Other Details:

  • It's using a Microsoft driver v6.3.9600.16384. The specific file is called cdrom.inf.
That suggests to me that it's not the correct driver, but how would I know?
There's no driver available from the Acer support site.
  • Windows 8.1 Pro

If there is foul language in the Windows system, you are probably infected with some type of malware and it has probably disabled your DVD drive.

Download Malwarebytes free, run it and see what it finds. https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

There's no foul language in the system.

The name of the drive manufacturer contains the word $-h-1-t. It's a Mat$h1ta.

This forum system is what keeps insisting it's a foul word.

It's definitely not a malware issue as all those avenues have been explored as well.

It could be the laser lens is dirty and can't read.

Go to Device Manager/DVD/CDROM and uninstall the drive, reboot.

Windows will reinstall and hopefully it will work.

    Hi philetus,

Did the uninstall/reinstall a couple times.

I did make the mistake of assuming that because it can read a disc, that the lens is clean and should burn a disc. Rookie mistake. I'll check that out. Thank you!

I have a UJ8FBS, which also has a 6.3.9600.16384 listed as the driver.

The driver for a DVD/CDROM is always installed by Windows and it's a Microsoft driver.

I didn't see anything in your post about it reading DVDs and assumed it didn't do anything.

Does it read and run other DVD/CDs?

    Have you tried this Fixit?
