I have an Acer Extensa 5210 , windows 7 - no recovery or installation discs but it is a legally licensed laptop. Earlier today I did a C drive file clean up with index and compress files boxes checked and on completion the option to clean up e drive system files appeared - as Windows presented me with the option i thought it must be a good thing to do ..... WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

All I see now is a black screen with msg TFGHT is compressed etc in a never ending loop. Tried all sorts but only thing that brings up anything different is start F2 which gives set up utility but doesn't seem to enable anything other than changing boot order or reloading set up defaults? Then what???

The absolute worst thing about this is that i am in so much trouble if I lose a few word doc files on this computer - restoring these files is actually more important to me than getting the laptop working again ( yes , I know I'm an absolute numpty for not saving elsewhere, if I wasn't my own Boss I'd sack me!)

Really appreciate advice of safest way to go so as not to lose files? I could try local computer shops ( don't know if there any good or not) ? Buy duplicate recovery discs through Acer or Windows and take it from there? Try and download recovery file online as detailed in some posts ?

I do have recent system restore points on the Acer and have access to another laptop which is Windows XP. I am in no way an advanced techie but can follow clear , step by step instructions .

Any advice greatly appreciated

    Lucyinthesky,

You can try to get into safe mode and see if that works. To get into safe mode you have to tap the F8 key at boot and choose it in the advanced options screen.

You can also attempt a startup repair in Windows 7, that might help fix the issue.
