Aspire S3-391 won't suspend/shutdown with any OS

Hi,

I'm having trouble with my Aspire S3-391 not shutting down or suspending. It will restart fine. If it tries to shutdown or suspend I get a black screen, sometimes with an _ in the top left, fans going and power light on indefinitely. It started about 6 weeks ago for no obvious reason. I initially thought it was a software problem, and attempted to solve it through the linux mint forums (thread), but have since found that the behaviour is the same in the Windows 10 dual boot, or when running from a live usb stick (ubuntu).

I've followed the advice here and updated the bios (including migrating from v1 to v2, although it was already up to date on v1), and installing the IME (v9.5) and VGA drivers from acer inside windows 10. I also disabled fast boot (after enabling hibernate to make the option appear), but all to no avail.

Does anyone have a suggestion that might help?

Thanks,

Ben

Sounds like it goes into a loop. At this point I would check the memory, check the hard disk, and then run a Windows REPAIR.

    benjsec,

If your computer came with a 20 GB hibernation drive, and you are no longer using the original OS, you may have to search this forum or Acer Knowledge articles to see how to configure your system when used with a different OS.

I've never used a hibernation drive, so I won't be of any help.  There's other S3 models that use a hibernation drive.

If your computer doesn't have a hibernation drive, then please disregard my post.

Thank you both for those suggestions.

The disk passes the SMART checks, and I ran chkdsk too which seemed to complete fine. Two passes of memtest didn't find anything wrong with the RAM either. As best I can tell windows repair isn't a feature in Windows 10, I did run a few of the built in repair tools, which didn't find any problems.

The laptop does have  the 20GB hibernate drive, which I have already modified the use of sucessfully. I'm not sure if I made it clear in my first post, but the shutdown/suspend features were working without any issue before and then stopped doing so for no clear reason. It also affects Windows, installed Mint 18 and live-cd Ubuntu, all with the same symptoms.

    Any further suggestions greatly appreciated.

The only things I can suggest......

    1.  Start over.  Backup your important personal files and wipe your drives with "diskpart clean" and try to get a fresh start.

    2.  Or completely start over.  Wipe your drives with "diskpart clean" and......

I'm not sure why you were trying to use that Intel Management Engine interface driver as the topic was about someone with Haswell-ULT.

If I were desperate, I would look at this Intel MEI if I had third gen.

I'm also not sure why your computer didn't make the list for the original release of Windows 10 or Anniversary.

Regarding your 20 GB hibernation drive........maybe it's not configured properly.  It's my understanding that your 20 GB hibernation drive must be configured in a special manner when you're not using the original factory OEM OS.  (See video below).  Not sure if the links below apply to you or will help.

I don't have any more suggestions.  Good luck.  Maybe someone else can help.

I know this is an old thread. However did anyone ever have success with resolving the Aspire S3-391 won't suspend/shutdown with any OS issue?

I have the exact same issue that Benjsec reported a good few years ago.

My Aspire S3-391 was working fine under windows 8.1 pro and then started to develop the not shutting down or suspending last week. It will restart fine just wound shutdown properly or recover from sleep .

I have tried various os on the same laptop as I initially suspected a software : lunix, win7, win8, win8.1 & windows 10 all have the same issue with not being able to shutdown or recover from going to sleep on the laptop.

My Aspire S3-391 was also on the latest bios available to it V 1.29 . I tried restore the bios defaults but the issue was still present along with a downgrade to bios version 1.26. Again the issue was still present.

This has surely got to be a hardware issue. The laptop doesn't seem to signal properly that it's shutting down. I have read quite a few people having the exact same issue with this laptop but just wondering if they ever found a fix ?

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.
