BIOS Acer Revo Nettop M1-601 / M1601 - Ubuntu drivers plus BIOS limitation

Hi all,

Two questions on a fairly new model that appears to have little information available from Acer or the wider Internet...

The M1-601 Nettop (Sold on ebuyer.com in UK as M1601).

1. I installed Ubuntu 15.10 and have had some trouble with

- Sound not working via the headphone jack

- Instability with the graphics adapter causing a stack trace and then a blank screen while sshd still allows connections

- General instability - nothing in /var/log

2. I had hoped to be able to set the power option to resume last state after power failure as this is intended to run 24x7 - but the BIOS is locked - any clues?

With thanks

Ian

Here is the Stack Trace I see when I touch the keyboard and wake up the monitor (HDMI):

Another update - seems to be a kernel bug so I added this option to grub which so far has made things stable...   let's see if I get beyond 36 hours:

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="intel_idle.max_cstate=1"

For info this fix has resolved the stability issue (I think)...  been up now for over 3 days...

    So to resolve:

BIOS!  I hope this is fixable and that I can change the power resume setting.

    Video and sound driver issues.

Did you manage to install to the EMMC HBG4e 32G drive?

I've not been able to find a installer that detects this disk, I have tried several versions of Debian and Ubuntu but none of the installers can see this disk.

Yes Ubuntu 15.10 server installer had no trouble.
Be sure to implement the fix above else you may get instability.

    Good luck

On and i chose Legacy instead of UEFI in the BIos.

How odd, Ubuntu 15.10 server didn't detect the 32GB EMMC drive, I could see it in the BIOS but not during the

    install.

Also I had to edit the grub command line to add `noapic` to get it to boot. With some install attempts I also needed `edd=off`.

I have ended up running the machine off a USB thumb drive.

Could you post the details of the disk from `lshw` and any other information you have so I can try to detect the disk and install to it?

Sure will do - I wont be home until Sunday night

You don't think it was UEFI vs. Legacy - if I change to UEFI now it can't find a boot device?

  • cdc
cdc Member Posts: 4 New User

It defaulted to Legacy in the BIOS and I haven't changed it, the only thing I changed in the BIOS was the boot order.

The machine is now running headless in a cupboard, but next time I have a chance to connect it to a HDMI device I'll try UEFI and see where I get to...

Yeah mine is on default of Legacy so that can't be the problem. If you are running headless then I guess having a useful Bios with restore previous power state is useful to you too. Let me know if you find a way to get to the advanced menu.

I added some RAM hence the 8GB.  I don't see the eMMC in the lshw

    Thanks for all that info!

I don't have the /dev/mmcblk0 device, so I guess that's where I need to start...

    Very welcome!

In the meantime Acer Support (who are very helpful) confirmed there is no unlock option for the BIOS...  which means unsupported options only...  anyone got a fix?  Thank you!

I agree, the missing power resume option in the BIOS on the M1-601 is an anoyance.

I also have an issue with the DisplayPort - can't seem to get that to work at all.  Are any of you running Linux via DP, or are you all using HDMI?

There was no output to DP when I first got the machine and booted under FreeDOS as supplied.  I had to resort to connecting my monitor via HDMI.

Now I have Windows Server 2012 installed (after some shenanigans with the eMMC drive), and the Intel HD display drivers and utilities working (I tried both 10.18.15.4248 and the latest 20.19.15.4320).  But still Windows does not recognise the second display.  There is no sign of it in Windows Display settings and the Intel utilities just report "Single Display".

Even if I boot the machine with just a DisplayPort monitor connected, there is no output.  This makes me think that there is something wrong with BIOS - as most dual display machines I am familiar with seem to boot in "Mirror/Duplicate" mode, at least until the OS is up.

There's a BIOS update R01.A3 available, but when I run that (from Windows) it identifies the installed BIOS version, and the updated version, but just reports "Not for your Laptop" and exits.

Any help or freedback much appreciated.

In terms of updating the bios, go to the download page and after searcging change the search bix from most recent to all, and you will see a second bios appear. This BIOS is for the L machines, jjust downoad and follow the instructions to flash, FYI you will need a dos bootdisk
