Good morning Jack, Finlux and Acer-Cory!
First, thanks again for all of the suggestions.
Second, the reinstall continues to be hung at "Installing Office 2010" after running overnight - I restarted the restore late yesterday afternoon.
I am going to get back to the owner of this machine to see if he has a dvd drive and/or recovery media. If so, I propose to do the following:
1. Restart the machine, pressing F2 to get into the setup.
2. In setup, set the dvd drive as the primary boot source.
3. Run the restore from the dvd.
4. Cross my fingers and hope that this works.
If the owner cannot supply these, I can order the media from Acer and buy a usb dvd drive from Amazon for about $50 total.
Does this sound like a reasonable approach? Comments and other ideas are very welcome!
Dave

Yup. Agreed. Prolly the quickest & least painful solution under the circumstances. I hope your friend appreciates all your work on this. Good luck.

Friend has neither a dvd drive nor the recovery media. Both are on order. Will arrive in a few days - will report back.
Thanks, guys.

Okay - i now have the disc drive and the Acer Recovery disks for the computer. I ran everything as directed - and it's hung again while installing Office 2010. I tried starting Task Manager to shut down the reinstall - same behavior as before: TM flashes up on the screen and then vanishes. What does this behavior suggest?
One question: the eRecovery menu gave me the option to reinstall everything, including the separate partition that houses the eRecovery software. I did NOT use that option since it indicated that I had to "remove all data from the hard drive" and I wasn't sure how to do that. So I used Option 1 which supposedly replaces the system software and programs. Should I have used Option 4 and reinstalled everything, including the hidden partition? If so, how do I remove all data on the hard drive?
Thanks
Dave

Sorry for the frustration. I will defer to finlux and Acer-cory on your specific questions at this point. If worse comes to worse, you can always try the bootstick method I referred to earlier. A bit of a hassle. But I know it can get the AO722 up and running again when the eRecovery refuses to do so. How do I know this? Guess.

The only solution I can come up with is to download the ISO image of Windows 7 Home premium (32 bit) - here (the one you need is the first on the list) and burn it to disk. You may convert it to a USB stick as suggested by JackE earlier in this thread if you have no external optical drive.
Next go to Acer support for your region and download all necessary drivers & applications for your model. Burn them to another disk or to a spare memory stick.
Boot from disk (or USB if that is your preferred method) and install Windows. You will need to use the product key from the label on the base of your Aspire One. Once Windows has finally installed, use the driver disk/USB to install all applications & drivers (although, I'd suggest leaving Office out of the equation!)
You will need to activate Windows, which can be done online. Windows will prompt you for this.
Once you have installed all the updates, I'd suggest to make an image either using free software like Macrium Reflect or Paragon Backup & Recovery or even the built in Windows image program.

Jack - thanks for your support!
Finlux, before I go the route you (and Jack previously) outlined, would it be worth trying the "reload everything" option described in the 2nd paragraph of my last post?
Thanks
