Hi everyone. I have an acer 7720 bought around 2009. Been ok but now the fan decides to switch off randomly, usually after about an hour or so. Have stripped down the fan, cleaned all the fluff and gunge from the air vents and even replaced the fan. The temp with the fan running is around the 50 degree mark with nothing `heavy` loaded. The fan stops when the temp is normal and then of course the temp shoots up until critical and then the laptop shuts down. Any ideas please?

The problem sounds like the hardware itself. I understand you said you replaced the fan, but was it an acer part? It sounds like the fan and BIOS are not communicating properly. The BIOS should be controlling the fan when temps begin to rise and drop. You can also try restoring the BIOS settings to defaults or try a BIOS update.
If that still does not fix the problem, please contact technical support in your region.

Thanks Ryan. The fan is a genuine Acer part. BIOS seems to be at the heart of the problem, but how easy is it to update the BIOS? Can i do any damage by attempting an update and what is the proceedure for doing this.
