I was planning to upgrade my aspire 5517 because it is too slow for me.
Would upgrading from 2gb to 4gb really improve performance that much?
If I upgrade the cpu should I put a tl-58 or tl-64?
I was wondering if the 64 would make too much heat. I read that the guys idle temp was 55 c. (In my opinion, it's a little much)
Thanks...

Have you cosidered a SSD? It will be a more beneficial upgrade along with the memory upgrade.

If I get an ssd, I can't do without atleast a 512gb, and it is much more costly than a memory/cpu upgrade.

You could try a Turion TL58 or even higher, íf you don't keep it ramped up to 100% for hours on end, you won't have to worry about the heat.
4G RAM would be good too, 2G is marginal for Win7
A SSD would give you a real speed boost, try replacing the DVD with a HDD caddy and you could have SSD+HDD, plenty of speed and space. You could have a 60GB SSD and whatever HDD you have now. Be sure to check before that your DVD is SATA.

For an Aspire 5517 I just upgraded bios to 1.11 from 1.09 and installed a TL56 (1.8 GHz Dual core). No good. Won't boot at all. Went back to TL20 and works fine (1.6 GHz), but slow. Does Acer provide quality support with an approved CPU upgrade list for their laptops?
