My ultrabook is almost a year old.  I used to be able to insert a bought or rented dvd and it would start to play.  Now it will burn dvds but nothing happens when I insert dvd.

It's important when asking for help online that you be as clear and precise as possible. From your post I know only that you have an ultrabook, but I have no way of knowing which model you have and that can make or break a solution. Because your unit is an ultrabook I'll assume that you have Windows 8, and I'll also assume you have Home Basic, which does not come with a native DVD player software. I recommend downloading VLC media player to see if that helps. Short of that, you have a 1 year warranty minimum, so if VLC doesn't work I'd suggest you call Acer directly.
