Can i do a 'clean' install of win7 from a MS ISO file and then use Acer Driver and Application backup disc to install drivers and software.

Is it possible to do so?  Yes, it may be, however, I would suggest that you load a system from the recovery media you created for the system instead of installing a retail operating system.

yes, i agree but the recovery discs were made from the original hard drive when it was failing so when the new one arrives I wanted a fall back plan to load the OS, and the microsoft ISO file is freely available if you have the original win7 number, but of course it will not have the Acer drivers etc.

I'm not certain what difference it makes as to when the recovery media was made.

It will restore the system to it's original factory configuration.  It does not make an image of the drive at any state.

Didnt make myself clear, the ISO way is only a last resort.  I had a few errors when making the recovery discs although eventually I got a set but until I use them I cannot be sure that they are good'

if you still have enough access to the  old drive to make an image copy either externally or using a liveCD copy of an imaging program of the PQservice recovery partition, you can put that on the new drive and run it with alt+F10 to install the OS (this is how they come from the factory--on first start up you run alt+F10 to install the OS with your options/ID)
