Is there any special external ODD that I must buy for the Acer Aspire R7-571, or will a general external odd work? And on that note any suggestions for ones to buy for it?

A general external ODD will work fine. I suggest you LG Optical Storage Devices.

The Aspire R7 have one USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0.
