Cannot hibernate after Windows 8.1 Upgrade

[ Editado ]

I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8, since upgrading my laptop will not automatically go into hibernate mode...it will when closing the lid but not on it's own after an extended period of time.

I thought at first it was a problem with the Windows operating system but after 4 days online with a tech from Microsoft they have done everything including repairing the operating system and have now told me that it is a problem with the actual laptop...makes no sense as it was working perfectly before upgrading.

This morning I contacted Acer support at which time they checked the power settings once again, they were ok. They then updated the BIOS, still not working. Updated drivers, still not working. They asked me to check to see if the hibernation mode works when not connected to wireless and when I checked it did work.

They want me to send the laptop in for repairs and they mentioned about putting back to windows 8 but when I upgrade it won't work again...what's the point.

Another problem that I have is that Acer does not pay for shipping to the repair depot and since I live in a remote community it is going to cost almost $75 to have it sent back...the laptop is still under warranty as it is only 7 months old. I would like to get the problem resolved without having to lay out the money for shipping. I must say that I would not buy an Acer again for this reason...I had an HP and it went in for repairs 2 times and each time HP sent a prepaid box to send the unit back...Acer doesn't seem to have it together when it comes to this.

Any ideas as to what to do to get the hibernation mode working when connected to wireless?

Re: Cannot hibernate after Windows 8.1 Upgrade

Siilverfox, I can help. When you went from 8 to 8.1, you deleted all your drivers and are now operating on generic drivers. If your only problem is Hibernation, you've done very well. You can download free programs that will put a Hibernate or Sleep button on your desktop, and I would advise that.

You should also set your machine to download windows drivers and updates automatically. The problem might actually be solved with time. Another options is to go to IObit.com and install their free driver seach software.

Hope this helps.

Re: Cannot hibernate after Windows 8.1 Upgrade

are you sure you are going to 'hibernate' when you close the lid and not 'suspend'? is 'hibernate' actually available and didn't get de-activated?

hibernate writes the current state and memory to HDD then completely shuts down (you will see HDD activity before the power light goes off.

suspend stops activity but keeps memory live for instant restart, but if power is lost or the battery dies you lose everything.

if hibernate is available it will show up as one of the options when you click the power icon.  if it is gone, to get it back you will have to access the command prompt as administrator and enter the following command line:

"powercfg -h on <enter>"(without quotes)  then "exit <enter>"

Saw a similar problem once and found it was not windows but the security system, that erased the hibernation data.
