Can I wake up my Aspire M5 481PT without the power key?

I'm running Windows 8.1 on an Acer Aspire M5 481PT.  Anytime the computer goes into sleep mode and/or hibernate mode there is only one way for me to wake it up: I have to hit the small power button on the lower right front of the laptop.

When I press the power button to wake it up, I am not touching it for a "long hold" like you would if you were forcing a shut down.  I touch it as lightly and for as short a time as I possibly can for it to wake up.  Sometimes when I do this it will just wake up "normally" and I log back in with my security pin and everything is fine and programs I was running are still open where I left them, etc.  The problem is that most of the time the computer "reboots" like a fresh start-up.  This takes a long time and programs I was running get shut down, potentially causing data loss or the pain of sorting through auto-saved versions of documents.

With all other computers I have owned, you could wake them up with just about anything.  You could just wiggle the mouse or mousepad, hit a mouse button or mousepad button, hit any button on the keyboard, hit the escape key, and so on.  That doesn't work with mine.  Are there set-up options or preferences I can modify to make my laptop wake up from sleep without the power key and its possible reboot implication?

Thank you.

Re: Can I wake up my Aspire M5 481PT without the power key?

Did your computer ship with Windows 8.1, or did you do an update to go from Windows 8, to 8.1?

If you did an update, did the system behave the same way before the update?

The most probably cause of what you are describing is third party software conflict, improper drivers, or not all windows updates are installed. I found a video online with some troubleshooting you can try.
