Hi All!

I won an aspire 5755G running windows 7 and am currently experiencing problems with it running extremely slowly. The laptop boots up quite quickly but applications are extremely slow to load and crash constantly after boot up. After about 20 minutes or so after boot up the problems seem to reduce significantly but I still experience random slow-downs and crashes.

The hard disk is not thrashing very hard and none of the processes seem to be using much memory (there is plenty free) and I have done a full virus scan to check if that was the problem so I am at a loss as to what must be causing it. If it was only once I would assume it was a windows update or something working behind the scenes but this happens every time I boot and has been going on for over a week.

I have experienced this problem once before quite recently and it randomly resolved itself only to come back a month later.

Can anyone suggest a solution? My laptop is borderline unusable in this state!

Sometimes this effect is triggered by an anti-virus software. Trying to access a file which is altered during boot. Try to deactivate all automatically started processes/applications. If this is working and your system is running normal, turn every single process on with several boot attempts. And take a look into your event viewer.

I'm not really using any anti-virus software at the moment besides the default windows firewall.

I opened up the more detailed resource manager to look into the problem and saw that it was in fact my disk which is being maxed out from time to time.

Some of the culprits were:

C:\\windows\prefetch\agGIUAD_ ... .db

And

C:\\system volume information \Sycache.hve

Both have randomly thrashed the disk and used millions of B/sec.

For some reason, other applications will occasionally go mad too. Upon trying launch Microsoft word it started using over 2 million B/sec where normally you might expect it to use a negligible amount.

I don't know much about all this so sorry if that's not clear but does any of that help to diagnose the problem?

Already tried to restore the factory settings, the usually resolves

How can I factory reset my settings without wiping all my downloaded files, programs etc? I have so much downloaded and installed it would take an age to back it all up and reinstate it.

Start - Acer eRecovery Management Restore - Restore to Factory Defaults longer keep user data, some programs will not work correctly so, then you should reinstall the applications again, the folder will be in C :/ Backup
