What is the white cable running over the hdd. Also, how is this removed/does it need to be replaced after installing a ssd?

A ribbon cable -- like the ones that usually attach keyboards to laptops. Yes, I would replace it after any physical action with the hard drive.

Thanks for the speedy reply. So I can just disconnect it then reconnect it after replacing the hdd? I assume it just detaches from the left hand side?

Any other tips on replacing the hdd on this laptop? Are their ribbons attached to the keyboard when you lift it off? Is it tricky to the reconnect these cables when putting the top back on?

I honestly don't remember if there was a ribbon attached to the keyboard but I think so. I think there may have been 3 cable ribbons that needed to be removed. It's no trickier than usual if you've ever removed a cable ribbon. You just want to handle them carefully.
