Aspire One 725 hangs after user login

I have had this notebook for 14 months and today for the first time it will not load the desktop. The screen toggles between a green screen and a black one. I have tried Alt + F10 and F12 at start up to access the recovery console but this doesn't open.

Suggestions gratefully received.

I understand you said the screen toggles between a green screen and a black one, however is this after you have looged into Windows? This could be a driver issue. Have you tried getting into safe mode and uninstalling the VGA driver? Or you could also try connecting your Aspire One to an external display to see if its hardware related.

The last resort would be to purchase recovery media to restore you system to factory defaults, if this issue is not hardware related.

Thanks for the reply.

The laptop starts to boot but fails after the login screen. I am unable to access the start button so cannot run CHKDSK or SFC/SCANNOW. I think a restore is required.
