camilcze>>>Uninstall the graphics driver and install the ones from the Acer website, the first intel, then they should win 8.1 go to sleep>>>
camilcze suggestion might be worth a shot, Dan. Check device mgr and sys info to see if you have the AMD and/or Intel VGA hardware. They should also show which versions you have now.

All right! I can sleep now! (and so can my computer!)
So it took me a bit longer than it probably should have but I uninstalled the drivers for both the AMD and Intel graphics. I tried the sleep function at this point and it seemed to be working.
I downloaded the drivers from the Acer download center as suggested, and eventually the Intel driver installed. I was having problems installing the AMD driver (tried installing from the setup file I thought was the right one, but it didn’t install). So I restarted and the same AMD driver as in place before was reinstalled.
I’ve tried sleep functions for display and computer, both plugged in and on battery, and it all seems to be working as it’s supposed to!
For reference;
Intel HD Graphics
So it looks to me like I am possibly two driver versions behind, but it works. I’m not sure how I had a later version than that recommended originally by Acer, but it may be that the vendor “upgraded” when he installed the SSD in place of the factory HDD for me when I first bought the computer.
AMD Graphics driver
As noted above, I tried to install the driver recommended on the Acer website but the later version (as recommended by AMD) reinstalled on a startup, and my sleep problem seems to be resolved so my plan is to leave it like this as long as everything is working. Again I’m guessing that the vendor “upgraded” the driver when he installed the SSD in place of the factory HDD for me
Conclusion
It seems to me that the problem this whole time has been the driver for the Intel HD Graphics. The newer version from the recommended one (see above) created the original problem.
Jack thanks very much for your time and suggestions, and persevering with me. It was all much appreciated.
Camilcze, thank you very much as well. You hit the nail on the head!

hi camilcze ... thanks very much for your suggestion ... your idea worked (although my AMD driver is a later version than the ACER website recommendation) see my other post for details
much appreciated!

I had the same problem with sleep mode after installing 8.1, tried different versions of drivers are working properly just 10.18.10.3355, and AMD 13.152, AMD just will not run Catalyst Control Center and configure switchable gpu, after the installation of the AMD Catalyst 13.251 works for me, but ntb goes to sleep mode, but hibernates, the same thing from the latest beta from AMD. If you do not install the amd driver so I can install the latest intel 10.18.10.3496 ntb works without a problem, but together with amd 13.152 does not go into sleep mode, the problem may be that the driver 13.152 amd gpu runs constantly-core (400MHz) and a driver 13.251 s default is activated powerzero technology and AMD is off, followed pres gpuz program. "problem" I see amd drivers, and poor cooperation with Intel
It would need to contact acer technical support to update AMD driver
i apologize for my english ![]()

Ok it seems like I started celebrating too soon. I thought I had tested the sleep function fairly thoroughly and it was working well. But as a further test I left my laptop on overnight two nights ago and something must have been going in the background and once again my laptop is not reacting as it should in sleep mode (again, having to manually shut down with the power button when it locks up with no display etc.)
My apologies if I have misled anyone … I believe the solution though, as tagged and as posted by camilcze, in his previous post on this thread, is correct, but I am running into another problem in confirming this on my laptop, as described below
I am now trying to install AMD driver 13.152 in place of 13.251 as currently installed. (13.152 is the driver on the Acer download site, and as recommended by camilcze earlier in his posts)
One would think this should be relatively easy to do (and I’m sure it is for most), but it is proving to be a challenge for me.
So my attempts so far to roll back the driver can be summarized as follows;
Meanwhile I have disabled the AMD graphics until I get the driver thing sorted out for sure. I’ll update this post with the results regarding effect on the sleep function once I’m successful in rolling back the AMD driver.
Meanwhile if anyone else has been through this situation I would appreciate any words of advice.
And btw camilcz if you see this, no need to apologize for your English, you obviously know a lot more about computers than me and communicated very well

OK, Dan. Don't try to uninstall or rollback the new version in Device Mgr. Instead, try to update it and point to the directory where you downloaded the old version. Hopefully, you'll get a message warning you that you're trying to install an older version and do you still want to do it. Then do it. Report back.
Thanks

Hi Jack ... thanks for not giving up on me. Ok I think I had tried your suggestion as well earlier, but I just tried again following your directions (attempted to update without uninstalling, pointed to the directory where I downloaded the old version … checking the box to include subfolders) … but unfortunately I almost immediately get the messages;
“The best driver software fr your device is already installed”, … and then below this …
“Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date” …. And finally an icon with the tag “AMD Radeon R7 M265 Series” …. Which is the correct model anyway
And to make sure I had the right software from the Acer download site I deleted my previous download and did it all again … downloaded again (“VGA_AMD_13.152.0.0_W81x64_A”) … and went through the same procedure … same result
It’s almost like there is a setting somewhere that doesn’t allow older drivers to be considered (?)

We may have to manually delete the new version files. But first, when you tried to uninstall and delete files for the new version from Device Mgr, did you get a message to re-boot? Or no message?

I'm quite sure I restarted on that one but don't remember getting a message ... sorry
