I installed all of the new drivers for 8.1 and after one of the restarts, suddenly I get no response from the physical keyboard or touchpad. The backlight is on. I am desperate as i am traveling and do not have an external keyboard to even try (assuming that would work). I bought a laptop--not a tablet. I am just so happy I have a touchscreen to eke out this message.

I'd rather quit than fight....

Used system restore to undo the Drivers update.

So I will have to hope the 8.0 drivers hold out.

If anyone has ideas on the original post, I will maybe give it another go.
