Re: Acer Aspire E1-532-2448 Audio

Hi Jack,

I don't think that I have. I'm at work at the moment but will try when I get home this evening.

Re: Acer Aspire E1-532-2448 Audio

Jack,

I tried the troubleshooter but no luck. However, what is odd is that warning tones from the computer, eg arrival of email,  are still happening. I've plugged a speaker into the jack so I can listen but the warning tones are definitely coming from the computer, not the speaker. I wondered if it might be that the audio system is simply noy talking to iTunes but if I select a news channel with videos on the internet I can't get sound there either. It seems really weird - selective operation.

Jack,

Tried the troubleshooter but no go. Still nothing except via a plug in speaker which works fine.

Re the last but one response ignore about the waning tone, I was mishearing, it was coming from the speaker, not the computer.

Re: Acer Aspire E1-532-2448 Audio

Hi John

Search for "sound" in control panel. Start selecting whatever pops up that seems related to your problem and start experimenting. At this point, that's about all I can suggest from your description of the problem. I really think it's just a sound setting that's messed up.  Beyond that, if you get really frustrated, I can only suggest you try erecovery mgt to factory defaults while saving your data option.

Re: Acer Aspire E1-532-2448 Audio

Jack,

I'm sure that you're right. Why did I ever get that blasted speaker?

Anyway, I am where I am and I'll follow up your suggestions.

Thanks for yur patience and I let yu know how things develop - successfully I hope.

Re: Acer Aspire E1-532-2448 Audio

Jack,

So far I have followed up your suggestion of checking "sound" in the control panel but that has had no effect. Working on the assumption that the attempt to pair with the iHome bluetooth speaker may have, in some way, messed things up, I have reset my computer to 20th Jul 2014 which had some interesting impacts on Norton and then on the Outlook Norton Add in (now sorted) but still no success.

What is odd is that when I switched the computer on yesterday there was a ping - definitely not the external speaker as it was not plugged in.

My wife had a sesssion with it, independently, as she had been on a roll successfully sorting some glitches with her Acer but she conceded defeat.

Sh did say that she had trawled the internet and some people had had a similar problem which eventually, inexplicably, resolved itself.

I really don't know what to do. I have replaced the speaker with a conventinal plug in so I have sound but I'm despairing on resolving the fundamental problem.

Ah! Norton! IMO, background AVs are more of a problem than they're worth esp in trying to resolve these kinds of mysteries. Accordingly, before trying anything else, do you see a way to completely uninstall or at least de-activate whatever version of this beast is running on your machine?

Also, John, did you use an erecovery mgt procedure with save data option similar to the one shown in this video?

Re: Acer Aspire E1-532-2448 Audio

Jack,

You have lost me. What are IMO, background AVs? Are you suggesting uninstalling or deactivating Norton or just IMO, Background AVs?

I presume it is prudent to copy all personal files onto a plug-in but what about installed software?

Re: Acer Aspire E1-532-2448 Audio

Sorry for using the acronyms IMO & AV, John. The former means 'In my opinion' --- also IMHO 'in my humble opinion'. The latter means 'anti-virus' programs that can run in the backround allegedly protecting the machine from malicious software  from the internet or inside emails. Norton is one of them. McAfee is another popular AV program shipped with new computers. These background AV programs sometime need be temporarily de-activated as they can interfere with or cause havoc with troubleshooting and legitimate software or driver installations. I personally rely more on standalone AV scanning software that usually don't run in the background such as McAfee's Stinger freeware. The standalones are much ore controllable but you must use a bit more common sense and caution in downloading and installing new software from the internet or when clicking on suspicious buttons or links in equally-suspicious websites or emals.

Yes, you should backup your important data files on a USB thumbdrive or external harddrive as well as any installation programs that you personally installed and that were NOT originally included in the factory-shipped software on the machine.
