S240HL monitor powers off when resuming from sleep

hi there, i have a new s240hl monitor i am having a problem with.

when my system resumes from sleep, at first the monitor appears to be waking up, but then it powers off entirely and the screen goes black. the only way to get it going again is to disconnect the power and then re-connect the power. this is very annoying.

i have tried several other monitors form other pc's in the house, including another acer monitor (different model) and this does NOT happen with any other monitor.

is there some setting i'm not finding to make it behave properly, or is my monitor faulty?

thanks.

    elguavas,

I would turn the monitor off when the PC is off/sleep/hibernate and power it back on after you have the PC powered on, it (desktop) might be having a problem sending a signal to the monitor.

I have exactly the same problem on the same model monitor.

Any solutions available on this forum, please?

You could go to power options and set "Choose when to turn off the display" to never, put it to sleep and see what happens when it wakes.

power settings make no difference to this. i've tried everything and nothing makes any difference.

it's VERY annoying. i'm going to try returning this under warranty. if i can get my money back i won't buy another acer monitor.

Are you running Windows 8 or 10 ? Acer only has drivers for this monitor for XP, Vista, and Win 7.

it used to happen on windows 7. since upgrading to windows 10 it still happens.

no "drivers" are required for monitors, you are talking about a device capabilities description file that does not act as a driver, the os detects the monitors capabilities via edid in any case and it was/is properly detected in both windows 7 and now in 10.

I thought it was strange. I had never heard of a monitor that needed a bios.

    Thanks for the info.

fwiw, the same issue occurs with this monitor in linux and freebsd, and in both of those i've tested with other monitors, including another acer monitor, just as i did under windows but the issue only occurs with this monitor.

it's definitely a hardware or firmware issue with this specific monitor.

I've tried swapping power supplies too.  No difference.

acer have arranged to courier mine back to a service centre. it's a hassle, and i'm sure it's going to end up costing them more than replacing it, but there you go. hopefully they will fix it. this whole thing has been such a pita.

I wish you luck.  It would be helpful if they could identify the source of the problem and let us know.  I don't have an option of returning mine - I am the second owner.

<Bump> This issue is not restricted to return from 'Sleep'.  It also happens in a normal power-up sequence. The on-switch LED changes from orange (standby) to blue (on) fairly shortly after the system unit power button is pressed, the boot screen appears and Windows starts to load.  At this point, the on-switch LED changes from blue to 'Off' and the screen goes blank. The monitor switch is inoperable. I fix this by removing the power jack from the rear of the monitor, waiting a couple of seconds and replacing the jack plug. The monitor then goes through its usual start routine and subsequently operates normally.  This not a Windows 10 issue.

I like this monitor when it works, but this issue is a PITA and doesn't reflect well on the manufacturer.

A very similar (if not exact) issue to my monitor,

    power regulator issue on S277HK

Have a look the videos and tell me what you think, in fact I would even suggest you film it if possible.

Thank you.  You do seem to have reproduced a similar set of events and outcomes as I - just a bit more thoroughly than I have!

I find that there is a certain amount of residual power coming from the power supply if I disconnect from the mains.  It is therefore not possible to just swich off/switch on; I must allow a period for the LED on the power supply to die  before reconnecting.

I wonder if there is a fault in the Eco system?

Are you able to scan/post the test sequence used by the Acer technician?  It would be handy for the rest of to know what they expect the behaviour to be in each event.

    Hi Grumpy,

Yes you are correct, you do need to plug out the cable from the transformer box, to release the discharge, plug the cable back in, then into a power scocket (I did not show that in my videos).

I am unable to do any further testing at the moment, because my monitor is now back with acer for repair, which I hope will be completed and returned back to me this week.

In regards to the Eco mode, that was my first point of call and I did see if i could change the setting on this manual but to no avail. But i would agree that it could be a reason for it not working.

But I would strongly advise you to film your findings if possible.

    Any news from Acer?

I have now taken to avoiding the problem by not using 'Sleep'.  I shut down the system and switch the monitor off as a part of the sequence.  The reverse works:  switch on system unit and then the monitor.  Seems to work - but I shouldn't have to do it.

    Hi grumpy,

Well all I can say is 'what a palarver!' my monitor came back from acer repairs as dead on arival, you can imagine that I am fumin at this point since it says in the repair report that they replaced the system board, but I suspect that the original problem was firmware related (as mentioned in this post) anyways I have taken the monitor back to where I purchased and hope to swap the monitor for something else.

It really [word filter avoidance] that they did not even check it to see if was working or not before they sent it, which is a really worrying thought.

I have the exact same issue after installing a new motherboard (I have a dual monitor setup. They worked fine before, but now one powers off entirely on sleep)

The one thing that stands out is that Windows labels one as A "Non Plug and Play Generic Monitor" or somesuch, while loading the PnP drivers on the other one. It may be a HDMI v. DVI issue? Either way, it is extremely annoying.

    Frustrating.  Yes.

My power-off work around no longer works around and I spend a fair amount of time around the back of the monitor unplugging-waiting-plugging the power lead to get the thing to work.

I think I coming towards the end of this short association with Acer products.  It doesn't take a lot of digging to find that there seems to be a generic power problem with certain S-series monitors which Acer are a little unwilling to acknowledge/address and I can't be bothered with that sort of customer care.  A waste of effort and money after which I am not going to throw more of either.

When it works, Acer, it's nice;  it's just reluctant to work reliably.

I've been getting the same issue for a while now and to solve it have been unplugging the cable after turning off and the plugging it bacn in in the morning to turn it on. until now this has been annoying but has been working. Today though this no longer works and the monitor wont turn on at all. It gets to the eco logo, then the screen goes black and then the blue light switches off. ive tried disconnecting the power serveral times, tried plugging it straight into the wall instead of an extension lead, nothing is working and im getting pretty **bleep** as i now cant use my pc. did anyone find a solution other than returning it? mine is second hand so that isnt an option.

UPDATE: I just tried taking the hdmi out and it will now turn on fine, but as soon as i put it back in it dies again, so now ive found the issue, any solution?
