installing an SSD drive on an Acer Aspire ES1-512-P9GT

I just purchased an Acer Aspire ES1-512-P9GT.

I know it will void the warranty but can I do the following

1. create a recovery drive as outlined on the ACER website

2. replace the 500 gig hard drive for a smaller SSD drive (120 gig)

3. use my USB Drive to reinstall my system on the SSD drive.

I know step 1 is a no brainer.

I also know (step 2) that the minute that I even think about replacing the HD voids the warranty

But can I restore to a smaller drive? That is the question. Errr at least one of my questions.

For a low/mid-grade laptop I am quite happy with this laptop. But I'd like to make this sweet.

I wont do this right away just so I dont void the warranty, but recommendations would be great!
