blinking orange light error codes

My Acer One orange battery light blinks 5 times when I first push the "on" button and nothing happens...then if I push it again, it starts normally (Win XP-SP3).

Is there a list someplace of the "error codes" that explain what the blinking lights mean on boot up?  If so, where is a link for it?

Thanks

    chaspear,

This sounds like the AC adapter is going bad. Does the battery charging light always show lit when powered on, or only when it is off.

If only when it is powered off, the adapter is definitely on it's last legs and cannot power the system and charge the battery at the same time.

If both on or off, the adapter is probably on it's last legs and needs to be replaced since the adapter can poweer the system and is probably not charging the battery enough while it's on.

    Justin:

I think you may have misunderstood my question about the orange blinking light when I first start the Acer.

I actually have 3 different chargers for this netbook...the original wall one that came with it, a second wall one that I bought later to leave in our RV (where we use the Acer most) and more recently a 12V dc charger, again for our RV that eliminates the need to use an inverter in the RV when using the Acer for GPS needs.

All 3 of these chargers will fully charge the Li-Ion battery pack effectively and quickly, so I don't think the charger output is the issue.

I recall at one point I did find a link on the web (or maybe the Acer website) that listed a series of "codes" that caused the Acer to blink orange on startup to help diagnose troubles with the unit...but I can't find that list anywhere at this point.

That is what I'm interested in finding...so I can see if this behavior is anything significant, or just a slight delay when I initially boot up the Acer.

The first push (from off) of the start button (whether plugged into a charger or not) results in the orange light blinking 4 times, about once every second.

If I push the start button again within 10 seconds, the Acer will start up fine...if I wait more than 10 seconds, it blinks 4 times orange and won't start up.

This behavior is no big problem, and it appears to not have anything to do with any of my chargers, but I would like to know what this operation means so if I need to do anything to the Acer, I can do that sooner than later.

    Thanks for your help

    chaspear,

Thanks for the update. If you have 3 different adapters and all will power this system it sounds like either a battery issue or a hardware power issue with the unit itself. My understanding of a battery light blinking five times means the battery is discharged and too low to power the system on itself, which means that it's not getting charged. That is why I asked if you see a battery charging light when the system is powered on and off.

The next question to ask would be if you have this issue with all three adapters, or just one specifically? If you experience this issue with all three, it sounds like the battery or a hardware power issue. Also, just to check, the AC adapter connection on the system is not loose in any way, right, it's snug?

    Justin:

I made a mistake in my first email indicating it blinks 5 times on startup...it actually blinks 4 times at about a 1 second interval in case that makes a difference to your analysis.

Interestingly, the battery indicates it charges fine with each of the chargers and when fully charged says it has 4 hours and 30 minutes of time left at 100% of charge.

With that said, I did a battery "reset" and that resulted in the same evaluation.

This battery is a is Simplo UM08A73 liIon 9-cell replacement   (http://www.amazon.com/Battery-Aspire-Series-replace-UM08A73/dp/B001NW57MU) that I bought 2 years ago.

Perhaps this display on start up relates to a non-Acer battery, or perhaps because this is a 9-cell one instead of the OE 6-cell battery that came with the Acer.

With that said, perhaps I don't need to do any more research and just live with pushing the start button twice when cold-starting the Acer...once we go on a trip in the RV, we start it up, fire up DeLorme Topo North America, plug in the USB antenna and the computer basically stays on the whole trip to guide us and log our travels, so this is NOT any big issue at this time, just was curious about what the blinking lights mean.

Thanks for your help, I should be all set for now.
