acer aspire 5732z waits almost exactly 1 minute during start-up

I have an acer aspire 5732z laptop (now running windows 10) which since I first had it several years ago has had a 1 minute delay during start-up (but not usually re-starts).

If I turn it on from shut down the blue disc activity light blinks - and then very shortly stoops and there's a 1 minute interval -- after which it starts and I get the normal windows start-up sequence.

I thought perhaps there might be a bios setting which was causing this -- but I'm reluctant to change anything without evidence -- which I don't seem to be able to find through internet searches!

Any ideas?

Try to disable fast startup from windows:

    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html

instructions are for windows 8 but it's the same on windows 10.

please report your BIOS version if possible.

I have disabled fast start up - and timed starting the computer and it makes absolutely no difference.

It is so close to exactly 1 minute of doing nothing that it makes me think there might be a "delay" setting somewhere.

There is certainly no sign of activity from the "disc" light for 60 seconds.

(I have now re-engaged fast start since it did not help).

One thing you can try is to boot from DVD or USB instead of HDD, something like Ubuntu LiveCD and check if it takes 1 minutes to start booting too.

So we can narrow the issue to OS or hardware.

    Thanks for suggestions...

    I updated the bios -- no change;

I have now tried ubuntu from a usb stick and that started almost immediately.

I also notice that when I start from shut down and press F2 for the bios settings I also have to wait almost exactly a minute for the bios settings to load!

    Among the settings are:

    Quiet boot: enabled

    Network boot: enabled

    F12 Boot Menu: disabled

    D2D Recovery: Enabled

    Sata Mode: AHCI

Don't know if any of that helps...

Generally when you restart - rather than start from a hard reset it does not wait a minute...

    Thank again

can you try to open ram/HDD cover and boot to BIOS without the HDD, check if it has the 1 minute lag.

also try with 1 ram stick at time if possible.

    Hi,

I removed the HDD and restarted -- about 13 seconds to get to the bios...

I have now reinserted the HDD and it still starts more quickly -- again about 13 seconds to get past the splash screen.

I'm not sure what this suggests!

Perhaps a poor connection on one of the pins for the HDD?

Either way thanks for your help.

I'll give it a few days and see what happens!
