Windows update on Aspire 5740 won't work after new HD install using recovery discs from Acer

My Acer 5740 laptop hard drive was failing so I replaced it and reinstalled Windows 7 with the factory reinstallation discs I got from Acer.

 

Everything seems to work great, including downloaded programs like Firefox, Norton, Silverlight, etc.

 

But I can't get windows to update!

 

I get this message:  "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running.  You may need to restart your computer."

 

Windows update is enabled in Services. The system clock seems to be correct. I've tried some things I have found on line, including using the Microsoft fixit download for the problem, changing the update settings in various ways, and various other suggestions.  Can't get it to work. 

 

I'm wondering if there is a solution someone knows of specific to reinstallations using the recovery discs from Acer for Aspire 5740 ?

    Miles,

     

    If you haven't checked, please make sure the BIOS time and date are set correctly. I know you said the system clock is correct, I just want to make sure you aren't referring to the Windows one.

     

    My suggestion, perform a system restore to before you installed programs to see if you have the problem, something may have become corrupted when things were getting installed.
