How to DEactivate two-finger tap on ELAN touchpads

I have been trying to find out how to deactivate the two-finger tap right click function of my ELAN-touchpad (on my Aspire V3-571, Windows 8.1), as it frequently bothers me when writing. The touchpad is located so that part of my left hand rests on it when writing. When I then try to use it with my right hand I often zoom [now deactivated] or open the context menu. I also sometimes randomly jump to a different part of the text, continuing my writing there.

I found several tutorials explaining how to activate the two finger tap, but none of the given solutions helped me in deactivating it again.

What I've tried:

1. Going to the ELAN-options and deactivating it under "multiple-finger gestures".

The problem is that there is no field for two-finger tapping for me. I have "zooming", "scrolling", "turning", "Three-finger-Tap", and "swiping with tree fingers" [all translated from german, so they might not be exactly called that in english].

What more wonders me is that under "one finger gestures" there is the "tap" option. And beneath the tick-box to de/-activate it it says "One Finger: click/choose"; but it does not say "two fingers" for example.

2. Changing it via regedit

I've found sites suggesting manually changing something in the registry. However the frequently given locations of the registry does not seem to apply to my machine, so I cannot find the keys I need to change.

If someone could help me with this, I would be soooo happy, as this has lead to several very annoying incidents while writing.

Thank you.

    IAm1,

Something you can try is to adjust the palm tracking and sensitivity settings under the additional tab. The more you move the slider bar towards maximum the more pressure you need to apply for the touchpad to respond to your touch. I think that this is probably a better answer than turning features off so that oyu still have their functionality without having to turn them on and off as you wish to use them.

    Hi Justin,

    thanks for your reply.

I did already change the settings, but the problem persits. I would really like to deactivate the two-finger tap as I don't ever use it. If I need the context-menu I just use the right click button beneath the touch pad.

    IAm1,

Okay, so you increased the sensitivity on both palm tracking and sensitivity settings and you are still experiencing the same issue? That's strange, to say the least, it should have made it more difficult to even register touch of any kind. Are they both set to maximum?

I have set the Palm tracking sensitivity to highest and the overall sensitivity to the third-lowest setting (any lower and the touch pad does not react properly to my intentional commands anymore). The problem still persists.

    IAm1,

You've adjusted those settings and things are still randomly happening with the cursor, that's very strange. If you've adjusted those settings to the point where it barely recognizes your touch without purposely doing it there could be a hardware problem that may require service.

It has gotten better after changing the settings, but at times it still registers part of my left palm resting on the edge of the pad as a second finger, leading to random jumps in the text or opening of the context meny (in turn leading to insertion of copied text, marking and overwriting parts of text etc.)

I'm really just looking for a way to de-activate the two-finger tap function. That would, in theory be a very easy solution to my problem, as I don't use that function anyway. In practice however, this solution (for reasons unbeknownst to me) is hard to obtain.
How can it be that some users have the option to deactivate that function and others not?

You could disable the touchpad completely and use an external USB mouse if that would be easier.

I do use a mouse when at home, but when going somewhere I usually don't take the mouse with me.
All in all, not using the touchpad is not the solutino I am looking for.

Since some people do seem to have the option to enable or disable two-finger tap in their mouse settings, I am interested in what I have to do to obtain that option, too. Download a different driver, maybe?

    IAm1,

You can try to download the drivers we have on our support site, there isn't anything wrong with doing that. I think that the resolution you are trying to achieve may not be feasable, I'm not seeing any way to disable two-finger tap, only single finger tap.
