Black screen when booting Acer Aspire One D255E (AOD255E) Windows 7 starter

Hi everyone, I am experiencing problems with my Acer Aspire one D255E which runs Windows 7. All of a sudden (I think after a Windows update) it is now booting up with a black screen, so I can't do anything. I can hear the fan running, and when it gets to the log in sound, it does the Windows sound - but nothing to be seen at all.  I had recently inserted some additional RAM and it was working fine; it was the Windows update which seemed to kill it.

I have tried taking the battery out, and booting up with the AC power cable in only - but no joy.

The next step seems to be to flash the BIOS. I have a 1GB USB drive which I've formatted to FAT. But I am not sure about what to do with recommendations such as http://lowendguru.com/2010/02/how-to-fix-the-acer-aspire-one-black-screen/ and http://eric.chromick.com/aa1/aspire-one-black-screen-of-death/#axzz3jZBxjXUs - it says to download the BIOS from Acer, rename a file as  ZG5IA32.FD and also flash it.exe, put both on the USB then boot from that.  There are 3 versions of BIOS for the AOD255E available at http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers - 3.14, 3.15 and 3.16. So I downloaded the latest - 3.16 - and extracted the files. But there are 2 fd files under the DOS folder - PAV70D2.fd and PAV70D3.fd. Which one do I rename as zg5ia32.fd?  And any other advice on how to do this, or to otherwise restore my little netbook?

thank you!

    D2 = DDR2 ram

    D3 = DDR3 ram

    so you must know which version of ram your laptop has.

    I'm not an Acer employee.

    thanks, that's helpful. It's DDR3 I hope, so I'll give it a go renaming the D3 file.
