What is the memory limitation for upgarading an Apire 5740? Is it dictated by the Laptop (Acer) or the windows OS?

Memory slots: 2
Maximum memory accepted: 8 GB of RAM
Frequency: DDR3 1066 MHz
There are no software limitations, if you are using a 64-bit operating system.
So your laptop have 2 memory slots, you can install maximum 8 GB of RAM on it at a maximum frequency of DDR3 1066 MHz
I personally recommend to choose 2 x 4GB instead of 1 x 8GB

Just to clarify:
Each slot can support a maximum of 4GB so to get 8GB you must use 2 x 4GB. You cannot use 1 x 8GB.
