Aspire E5-571-35LV suddenly won't go into sleep mode

When try to put it into sleep mode, it instantly goes to the locked screen (the 'wake up' screen) instead of going into sleep mode.

This is a sudden problem, it just started a couple days ago.  There were no new programs installed, no new devices hooked up to the computer, and/or no new changes made (that I know of) coinciding with the onset of this problem.  I have run a virus scan, which turned up empty.

I am able to shut it down without a problem, and it starts up without a problem- I just can't get it to sleep.

I found one page online that suggested I go to "Power Options" -> "change when the computer sleeps" -> "Change advanced power settings" -> "multimedia settings" -> "When sharing media" ; "when plugged in: prevent idling to sleep".  But this shouldn't suddenly be a problem if I don't have any device hooked up (and I'm not immediately sharing media), right?  [edited to add: I just tried changing it to "when plugged in: allow computer to sleep" and it didn't make a difference- it still won't go to sleep.]

Any suggestions on what the problem might be? It's an Aspire E5-571-35LV (though the set up guide says it's an Aspire E 15).  I bought it new, four months ago, in 12/14.

    plamerama,

When you open the power options screen there should be selections on the left hand side of the window, one that should say choose what the power button does, if that is what you are using to put the system into sleep mode. As far as it just started having this problem, it could have been Windows updates that caused the issue to start happening. You can preform a system restore to when you know it worked right and work forward from there.
