Aspire 5100 Black Screen

I have an Aspire 5100 with a black screen problem.  Windows 7 SP 1, 64 bit, 4MB RAM.  On POST, all lights, the fan, the DVD drive, etc. come on as normal.  I have removed the battery, memory, HD, etc. but no luck.  I have tried a CMOS reset using the jumper below the RAM but that didn't do anything.  No image at all on either the laptop screen or when connected to an external monitor.  I have tried flashing the BIOS using a FAT-formatted 1GB USB drive and the Fn+Esc keypress, but I don't think anything is happening.  I tried shining a light on the screen but I don't see anything (i.e. I don't think it's a backlight problem).

It may be worth noting that this situation developed as follows: I was attempting to install a Logitech USB web camera, but the laptop refused to recognize it.  In the process of troubleshooting that install, I tried to plug in a Dell keyboard and an MS mouse, but the system didn't recognize those, either, and neither peripheral would power up its LEDs.  The next time I rebooted, the system would get just past one of the early start-up screens, and then I could see a blue screen appear for about a half second, and then the machine would reboot and display a message about having failed to start correctly the previous time.  After several occurances like that, I stopped being able to see the screen at all.  When I first did the USB BIOS flash, I wasn't getting any LED on the USB drive, but then after a couple attempts, the USB LED started coming on when the drive was plugged in.

Any thoughts?

    Jackson666,

If you connected an external monitor and there was no display that sounds like a GPU issue.
