This is a fairly new laptop and runs smoothly in normal operation. However after a normal power up everything is set up and normal but randomly, and often, will restart then functions normally again.

When it reboot, it's from the desktop or at windows logo?

if it's from the windows logo, this happen when new updates are installed and need to be rebooted.

It happens shortly after desktop appears. If it was for updates would it not tell me?

    Yes, it will write.

so it's not normal if you reach the desktop and then it reboots, it will be very hard to find the issue.

can you please take a screenshot of task manager startup?

    CTRL+left SHIFT+ESC

then click on start up tab

    ok, please do this:

    1. press windows logo key + X, click on System.
    2. Click Advanced system settings.
    3. Click the Advanced tab.
    4. In the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings.
    5. Click to clear the Automatically restart check box.

So next time it will reboot, probably you will get a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) instead of automatic reboot, please take note of the error or take a screen picture.

Firstly, thanks for your help on this. I am a bit worried about BSOD, will I be able to return to start up if this happens?

Followed your instructions and typical the laptop didn't crash this morning. I will update when it happens again. I am also posting the event viewer for this morning if it helps at all.

I have shutdown and restarted again and no crash but this has happened before and I'm sure it will return. From the event viewer there appears to be a driver fault. Screenshot below.
